October 31 is many things at once, and it has always been. That is not a coincidence of tourism or marketing — it is baked into the date’s oldest argument, the one that pits transformation against tradition and has never really been resolved.

Consider the year 1517. On this date a German monk named Martin Luther, whose feast day the Anglican Communion still marks on October 31, reportedly posted his Ninety-Five Theses — an act that split Western Christendom and set a continent alight for the next century. The observance calendared here is not Luther’s birth or death but his feast day, a Christian commemoration, which means the date that the world treats as a carnival of costumes and candy is also, quietly, the date that Christendom marks the beginning of the Reformation. The sacred and the spooky share not just a neighborhood but the same square on the grid.

The deaths the date collects sharpen that strangeness. In 1993, Federico Fellini died — a director who spent his career making the dream world and the waking world permeable to each other, whose films blur the border between face and mask as completely as any Halloween tradition. In 2020, Sean Connery died, an actor whose career was itself a kind of myth-making: a Scotsman who became the world’s most recognized image of suave English menace, performance and persona so fused that the performance became the persona. Both men made their livings at the border between appearance and actuality. The date took them both.

It takes others more abruptly. On October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her own Sikh security guards outside her home in New Delhi. October 31 does not suspend its capacity for mass grief simply because children are ringing doorbells somewhere.

Among its births, the date produced Hokusai in 1760 — the Japanese printmaker who spent his final decades insisting he had not yet learned to draw — and Peter Jackson in 1961, who built Middle-earth in a country that did not exist until he invented it on film. Vallabhbhai Patel was born here in 1875, the deputy prime minister who held India together in its first years of independence and whose political legacy, like the date itself, remains actively contested.

What October 31 finally demonstrates is that a date cannot be assigned a single register. The costumed and the commemorated coexist here without negotiating terms; the festival and the grief proceed on parallel tracks.
